Objective:
To explore the principles of radiation shielding by building and testing a simple model.
Key Concepts:
- Absorption of radiation
- Shielding effectiveness
- Material science
Project Outline:
- Introduction: Explain how proton beams are hazardous and require proper shielding. Discuss the role of different materials like lead, concrete, and polymers.
- Materials Needed:
- A Geiger counter or smartphone app to detect beta radiation.
- Safe radioactive source (like potassium salt).
- Everyday materials (aluminum foil, cardboard, plastic sheets).
- Tasks:
- Build small shields using these materials.
- Measure radiation levels before and after placing the shield.
- Analyze which material works best and why.
- Outcome:
Create a report comparing the shielding properties, linking findings to applications in proton therapy facilities.
Mapping Beam Energy: The Penetration Power of Protons
Objective:
To simulate the concept of beam energy deposition and its effect on various targets.
Key Concepts:
- Energy transfer
- Stopping power of matter
- Medical imaging
Project Outline:
- Introduction: Discuss how protons lose energy as they travel through tissues, leading to effective targeting in cancer treatment.
- Materials Needed:
- Gelatin blocks or soap bars (to simulate tissue).
- Marbles or BB pellets (to simulate protons).
- Rulers and scales for measurement.
- Tasks:
- Launch the marbles through the gelatin/soap at varying speeds.
- Measure the depth of penetration and the stopping point.
- Plot results to mimic Bragg peaks.
- Outcome:
Present a poster explaining how this experiment correlates with actual proton therapy dose planning.
